Why is a grace period included in health policies?

To allow new benefits to start immediately.

To provide continued coverage while a premium is late, under the policy terms.

A grace period is a short window after the premium due date during which the health policy stays in force even if the payment hasn’t yet been made. This protects you from losing coverage for a simple delay, like a late paycheck or mail, and gives you time to submit the payment without interrupting benefits. During this period, claims can still be paid as long as the overdue premium is eventually paid per the policy terms. If the premium isn’t paid by the end of the grace period, the policy can lapse and coverage ends, unless reinstatement is arranged under the policy’s rules. So the purpose of a grace period is to provide continued coverage while a premium is late, under the policy terms.

To impose a cancellation penalty.

To automatically increase premiums.
